Additives can:
- make you fat
- give you cancer
- cause you to get diabetes
- give you heart disease
- make you have high blood pressure
- cause hormone imbalances to name just a few
The Delaney Clause of 1958 halted the usage of cancer causing chemicals being used as additives, but what they didn't say is chemicals before 1958 were still being used.
In 1996 the food quality control act removed the ban on pesticides that were included in the Delaney Clause.
Most processed meats, unless you buy organic and nitrite-free, contain nitrates or nitrites. As stated in the bullet above, these are chemicals that are classified as probable carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). They probably cause cancer.
BHA, as stated in the bullets above, is a preservative that IARC classifies as a possible carcinogen; it possibly causes cancer. It may be used to preserve foods, like cereal, that come in a box, or it may be sprayed on the packaging instead. Either way it should be avoided.
Chinese style salted fish cause cancer. Not probably, not possibly. IARC says they do cause cancer.
Artificial Sweeteners, and the list goes on.
As the chemicals companies become more aggressive with there lobbying efforts, we become more concerned about our health. Diseases are on the rise for both children and adults.
The key to battle this invasion is knowledge. Know how to read between the lines, and know what to look for.
